El Sombrero

Oil and mixed media on canvas 24 × 24 in 2025
Portrait of a man wearing a sombrero painted in red black and white

He stood at the edge of the square for an hour without moving, and everyone moved around him. I sketched the silhouette first and only found the face later.

The red came from a plastic crate behind him, the kind that holds fruit and never gets thrown away. Once that red was in, the portrait stopped being polite and started being true.
